Kimberly Garza is the author of the novels Between You a River and The Last Karankawas, which was a New York Times Editors’ Choice, an Indie Next pick, and an Audible Best of the Year audiobook. Her stories and essays have appeared in Texas Highways, Copper Nickel, TriQuarterly, Creative Nonfiction, and elsewhere. She is a National Endowment for the Arts creative writing fellow and a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin and the University of North Texas, where she earned her Ph.D.
A native Texan—born in Galveston, raised in Uvalde—she is the daughter of a Filipina immigrant mother and a Mexican-American father from the Rio Grande Valley. She lives in San Antonio, where she is an associate professor of English and director of the Creative Writing Program at the University of Texas at San Antonio.
